There are rumours going around that Kenwood are going to announce a new Radio at the ARRL and TAPR DCC
which will address some (all) of the shortcomings of the venerable TM-D700. Interesting, very interesting.
Amateur (Ham) Radio operation in Canada.
I made an enquiry of the Radio Amateurs of Canada a few weeks ago about recipracal license agreements. Some countries require you to apply for a license for the duration of your stay, and this can be quite expensive. In this case the reply was most welcome news.
If you have a CEPT on your licence, you can operate without further ado in
Canada. You should also consult the Standards for the Operation of Radio
Stations at

Cheers Guy. As Ireland is a participant in CEPT I can just bring along my own license documentation.

Very freaky
A cool link from EirePreneur. This is genuinely freaky, in a cool kind of way.
Ham Radio is Just Like Fishing
So says Pat, N0HR. I must say, I like his analogies. Its a pity I hadn’t read this yesterday, when I would have been more prepared for questions.
Earlier today I had my own personal ‘driver’. I was operating as a ‘lead’ car in the AOL Sponsored cycling race sponsored by the Comeragh Cycling club. I managed to explain the basics of what we were doing to him (Base, 4 Cars, and at least 3 portable stations at strategic points). And I think he appreciated how useful it was to know where everyone was, but what blew his socks off was when the penny dropped as to what information APRS was providing to the guys back at base.
Hmmm, I wonder what fishing analogy could be used for APRS?
Small Head
Firstly, I’m kinda impressed with that last post. It was entered on the keypad of my Kenwood TH-D7 Handheld Radio, sent as an APRS message, sent as email to a mail account, and then ‘popped’ from there and dropped onto the blog.
So, to get back to the title, apparently I have a small head, so Bob Heil told me in an email.

Great Story.
A great story, very entertaining. As one of my winter projects I’m planning to get PSK-mail up and running, both as a server and as a client. The main delay at the moment is time and the slight annoyance that when I transmit, I stand a good chance of setting off the house alarm. I need to get rid of that problem first.
FON in Tramore
I ordered a FON router a few weeks ago, it arrived last week but I really only got a chance to set it up last night. It’s sitting in my attic, nestled in beside my Star-Os router. At the moment I have no idea yet what kind of coverage it gives, but I’m planning to add a Panel Antenna to it and point it down towards the Church.
I’ll try and get to walk around the area with a PDA over the next few days, to see what kind of coverage area it has.
Last year, at various times, I ‘opened up’ the star-os router I have for a few days at a time. This got lots of anonymous connections, including a few that my neighbour took exception to and chased away. Hopefully he won’t mind this time 🙂
