After spending a relaxing two nights in Tremblant (which reminded me of Aspen actually) we hit the road again today. We bypassed Montreal (we plan to spend a few days there on the way back down), and arrived in Quebec, just in time to greet the rain which has been moving across Canada the last few days or so. Looking forward to wandering around the ‘old town’ tomorrow and getting a good look around.

Digital Communications Conference
There are rumours going around that Kenwood are going to announce a new Radio at the ARRL and TAPR DCC
which will address some (all) of the shortcomings of the venerable TM-D700. Interesting, very interesting.
Amateur (Ham) Radio operation in Canada.
I made an enquiry of the Radio Amateurs of Canada a few weeks ago about recipracal license agreements. Some countries require you to apply for a license for the duration of your stay, and this can be quite expensive. In this case the reply was most welcome news.
If you have a CEPT on your licence, you can operate without further ado in
Canada. You should also consult the Standards for the Operation of Radio
Stations at

Cheers Guy. As Ireland is a participant in CEPT I can just bring along my own license documentation.

Bungy
Going through the rubbish in my office today, I found a DVD of the bungy I did in Queenstown. It is kind of fun to watch. It is a ‘VOB’, as I haven’t re-encoded it, so you might want to right click on the link and “Save as”.

Amateur Radio in the news
A short article extolling some of the virtues of Amateur Radio and also the difficulties it faces.
“A few months ago, NBC’s Tonight Show staged a race between a pair of ham-radio operators with Morse-code keys and a couple of kids with text-messaging cellphones to see who could communicate faster. The hams won hands down, proving, in the minds of some, that old technology could hold its own against new. In recent days, ham radio was put to the test again by Hurricane Katrina. This time, however, lives were at stake.”
They’re home!
As reported on the news tonight, the Northabout Crew are home safe, after completing a voyage that is unique in the history of modern yachting.
Battery Matching
Here is an interesting paper showing how some research and thought led to a procedure for the selection of NiCd batteries suitable for use in OSCAR II.
